Know About Cold Weather Exercise Clothing

The makeup of the layers of clothing worn is important for your comfort during cold weather exercise. The goal with all layered clothing is to stay warm and prevent heat loss without causing overheating and excessive sweating. The initial layer, or base layer, should be of wicking material to pull moisture away from the skin so sweat does not have a chance to evaporate and cool the body. The next layer should be an insulating layer like fleece to provide warmth. The outer layer helps defend against rain or wind. Windproof and breathable fabrics are important. A hood can further protect the head and face against the elements.

Wearing a hat and mittens or gloves helps keep body heat in. A wool hat has insulating properties that keeps the head warm even when wet. You should also avoid overdressing. Wearing too many layers or clothing that is too thick and warm can be harmful as well. Running and other forms of tiring outdoor exercise can make the athlete feel as if it 20-30 warmer.
